LUTHIER, RESTORER, REPAIRER

I now have over 25 years experience as a luthier. I started doing set ups and minor mods on my own guitars as a teenager having begun playing as a 4 year old. During my gap year in Australia in 1981-2 I spent six months as manager of the Guitar Factory shop in central Sydney and formed a long standing association with Maton guitars which continues as UK warranted Maton repairer.

During my time at the Guitar Factory I learned more including fret work and structural damage repairs and continued to learn by working on my own guitars and those of my friends before I progressed to full time repairer at ABC Music in Addlestone, Surrey, in 1984 and made my first complete guitar in 1985, a one piece bubinga superstrat with 3 humbuckers and Kahler trem I still have and play before going on to work with Bell Music in Surbiton until 1988.

I continued part time during the early 90's whilst my daughter was young before resuming full time in 1997 at Ritz Music in Putney London, opening The Guitar Tree Luthiery. I trained Dave Mason, the current incumbent repairer before moving on to my own premesis in Ripley, Surrey in 2005. I moved to Cornwall in 2008. During the intervening years I have made over 150 instruments and repaired many thousands. My daughter, Georgia now works part time with me after 18 months training at Ripley.

I specialise in old guitar restoration and re-engineering, a green initiative recycling guitars, which brings life back to many old neglected instruments, providing fabulous guitars at very low cost. I also make custom instruments to order. I am happy to repair any guitar problem to a high standard and satisfaction guarantee all of my work.

At Dozing Dog we use 40 years of experience in the maintenance, design, and manufacture of audio equipment to offer a high standard of repair. With our well equipped workshops, large spares holding, manufacturers' support, and experience of working to high engineering standards, we offer a fast and good service, which is why most of our work is from personal, manufacturer, and dealer recommendation. We also repair to component level where possible , which is more that many manufacturers now do.

We have regularly worked on and collected equipment going back to the 1930s, carrying out all types of sympathetic repairs to "Vintage and Classic" including rebuilding components to look original. We also have access to metal and wood working facilities and can offer repair to cabinets, chassis, recovering, etc. Our experience in sound and electronics goes back to the late 60's when valves were commonplace.

Geoff trained with the BBC as an electronics engineer, working in both studios and outside broadcasts maintaining and operating equipment. He worked for Ampex, a leading American manufacturer of studio, recording, and post production equipment, also Taylor & Grover who sold and serviced Hi-Fi and PA equipment plus the design and building of high quality custom Valve PA amps.

Since the 80's he has had his own maintenance business, and also freelanced around studios, post production, maintenance, installation, OBs and large concerts. Through this time he has also been repairing amps and keyboards for musicians.
